Wawrinka Stan-ned in first round loss to Alexander Bublik at Monte Carlo Rolex Masters

Updated: Apr 25, 2022

After a 13 month absence to injury, it wasn't the perfect start for Wawrinka at Monte Carlo Rolex Masters. He was leading by a set when Alexander Bublik rallied back to win the remaining sets and ultimately win the match.

The 2014 champion was leading 3-6 when Bublik rallied back to win the remaining sets 7-5 and 6-2 respectively in front of a shocked crowd at Court Rainier III.

Alexander Bublik progressed to the second round after a 2 hour 5 minutes battle with Wawrinka.

I think the body’s getting much better. I am still far away from where I want I want to be, but I think I am going in the right direction. I think today was a positive match. It was a tough loss, but I am happy with the way I was playing today. I was playing better, feeling better on the court of course physically. I spent a lot of mental energy to focus, to stay there as it was tough at the end, but I am happy with what I have done today”, said Wawrinka.
