A five-goal thriller: Portugal 3 - 2 Ghana

In a dramatic Group H match, Cristiano Ronaldo scored for the first time in five World Cups as his penalty opened the scoring for Portugal to win 3-2 against Ghana at Stadium 974 in Doha.

After leaving Manchester United by mutual consent following his incendiary comments, Ronaldo became a free agent. He responded to his detractors by making history when he converted the opening penalty kick after being fouled by Mohammed Salisu on the 65th minute.

When veteran Ghanaian striker Andre Ayew scored a close-range goal against the flow of play in the 73rd minute, Portugal soon answered with goals from Joao Felix (78) and substitute Rafael Leao (80), both of which were assisted by Bruno Fernandes.

It ought to have given Portugal the lead they required to win easily, but Ghana's persistent late-game comeback cut the margin in half. The second goal of the game for the Black Stars was headed in by Osman Bukari, who jumped highest inside the penalty area. All five African teams will exit round one of the group stage without a win after failing to equalize despite being given nine minutes of extra time.
